Buu Dao
Hi, I’m Buu! I’m a Registered Psychotherapist (Qualifying) (#20252) who specializes in neurodivergence, complex trauma, and racial identity, and I have lived experience in the areas I practice.
I take a neurodivergent-affirming, trauma-focused, non-pathologizing, and decolonizing approach when working with clients. This allows us to look at your struggles with compassion and give your brain and body what they truly need, rather than trying to shame yourself out of them—which often worsens mental health and self-esteem in the long run. My approach also takes into account the impact of the systems around you, so that together we can form a holistic understanding of both your challenges and who you are as a person.
We may work well together if…
- You’re looking for a relational and chill therapist who’s also willing to challenge you if needed
- You want a therapist who doesn't mind and encourages you to fidget, colour, sit on the floor, cross your legs, not maintain eye contact, snuggle in a blanket, or whatever you need to meet your sensory needs during sessions
*Buu is currently accepting new clients for virtual sessions across Canada and is offering in-person sessions in Calgary
*Buu’s services are covered by the Autism Funding Unit (AFU) of BC

I help neurodivergent individuals who were diagnosed later in life, are currently seeking a diagnosis, received one in childhood but were never fully informed, or whose diagnosis wasn’t taken seriously. Together, we work on navigating life in ways that reduce the need to constantly mask and create space for you to live more authentically.

You're looking for a way to process and heal from trauma that doesn’t rely heavily on talking. You may find that talk therapy helped, but there seem to be some areas that haven't been fully addressed. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) offers a gentle alternative that can help your brain reprocess painful memories without needing to always relive them in detail.

I help immigrants and children of immigrant parents who feel caught between the expectations and culture of their family and the culture of the society they’ve grown up in or moved to. Together, we explore ways to honor both parts of your experience while building a sense of belonging and self-trust.

I help people who have spent years putting others first, shrinking themselves, and saying yes when they really wanted to say no—just to keep the peace. This often leaves them drained, anxious, resentful, and stuck, even though they’re trying their best. I also support those who struggle to build and sustain healthy relationships because of trust issues, fear of abandonment, or pushing people away. Many of the people I work with live in a state of hypervigilance, always on alert to feel safe, and often find it challenging to manage emotions—whether that means feeling things intensely, becoming overwhelmed, or shutting down completely.
